This found-footage frightener takes the clichés of the demonic-possession genre and leads them down fresh shock corridors. It depicts the unearthing of a 1977 TV chat show that, in a bid to boost its ratings, put on a Halloween edition that proved ill-fated. Night Owls host Jack Delroy (a pitch-perfect David Dastmalchian, in full Alan Partridge mode) brings on a psychic, a magician and a parapsychologist who interviews Lily (Ingrid Torelli), the sole survivor of a Satanic cult's mass suicide. But there is a demon still lying within Lily, and "Mr Wriggles" is ready for his unbilled guest appearance. Neatly nailing the film's period, and a particular flavour of cheesy American pop culture, Australian writer/directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes neatly swerve any genre familiarity with jet black humour and superb special effects. There's real panache to this low-budget jolter, which manages to be as briskly entertaining as it is consistently unnerving.
