Summary
Fantasy horror starring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi. In 1857, a Danish polar exploration ship rescues Baron Victor Frankenstein from the ice and the crew is attacked by a powerful man-like monster. Frankenstein recounts the story of how he created the frightful Creature by harnessing the power of the elements. However, his version of events differs from that of the Creature, which has its own account of life under the maniacal scientist.

Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi star in this definitive take on Mary Shelley's 1818 tale of the "Modern Prometheus". Elegantly made and beautifully crafted, writer/director Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) uses every bit of film-making guile to examine what happens when a scientist plays God. Isaac is the 19th-century pioneer Dr Frankenstein, who harnesses Mother Nature, modern physics and the patronage of an arms trader (Christoph Waltz) to bring to life a creature (Elordi) stitched together from body parts. With a script in thrall to old-fashioned movie storytelling, as well as nods to Universal classic Bride of Frankenstein, this is a remarkably tactile work from del Toro. Isaac hovers on the right side of madness as his creator treats his creature with disdain, while Elordi finds poetry in a near-silent performance. With burnished, beautiful cinematography from Dan Laustsen, a highly charged score from Alexandre Desplat and exquisite production design from Tamara Deverell, gory and grim it may be but this is a tragic tale told with captivating style.
