Terry Staunton

Old-school patrol cop Thomas Jane is paired with idealistic rookie Luke Kleintank for the younger man's first shift cruising the underbelly of Los Angeles in this compelling, if derivative, crime drama. Over the course of a single night the mismatched partners encounter events both comic and tragic from the viewpoint of their squad car, the Crown Vic of the title. Writer/director Joel Souza frames the action in episodic style, albeit with a dramatic arc that culminates in explosive fashion late in the running time, punctuated by thought-provoking dialogue between the two leads about the changing face of policing and the ongoing decline of society. The 2001 Oscar-winner Training Day is an obvious template, although the film has enough character of its own to reward viewers' attention, and the plot is held together by Jane's layered portrayal of the wise veteran. Kleintank does well as the innocent on the receiving end of a rude awakening, and Josh Hopkins is memorable as a plainclothes detective on the verge of a psychotic meltdown.
