Summary

Crime thriller starring Richard Gere, Andy Garcia and Nancy Travis. Dennis Peck is a Los Angeles police officer who knows his way around the law. He can launder money, run a scam and even, for the right price, arrange a murder. But newly promoted internal affairs investigator Raymond Avilla doesn't trust him, and time is beginning to run out for Peck.

In this gripping thriller from Leaving Las Vegas director Mike Figgis, Andy Garcia stars as an Internal Affairs investigator who's determined to prove that fellow police officer Richard Gere is corrupt with fingers in a lot of iffy pies. Gere - who had only been in critical and commercial flops throughout the 1980s, despite the success of An Officer and a Gentleman in 1982 - is especially good as the dishonest and often violent policeman. Indeed, it's probably true to say that this is the movie responsible for reviving both his career and his leading man status. Gere's nastiness as the unscrupulous Peck is something of a revelation after years of pretty boy roles, and the vendetta that develops between him and the perpetually smouldering Garcia enthrals and repels in equal measure.
