This early road movie outing from director Francis Ford Coppola is certainly not without interest today, but its 1960s attitudes have dated badly. Nevertheless, it is fascinating to see James Caan and Robert Duvall at a stage of their careers prior to The Godfather, and there's a superb performance from Shirley Knight in the neurotic leading role as the pregnant housewife who takes life on the lam. Uneven and slackly paced, this remains an adult drama of moderate curiosity, while Caan's brain-damaged character may seem distasteful to many.
