Tom Hutchinson

Unleashed upon the big screen from Frederick Forsyth's thriller, these hounds unfortunately have been muzzled and boast too few snarls. Christopher Walken plays the disillusioned mercenary caught up in a dastardly plot to take over a West African state, but any possible thrills are overpowered by too much explanation. John Irvin's direction of the macho passions on display is both predictable and unfocused - all Tom Berenger and Colin Blakely seem to do is grimace a lot. Set in Graham Greene territory, the tale needs that author's emotional urgency to give it the purpose it lacks.
