A star rating of 3 out of 5.

James Mottram

R&B legend Luther Vandross is celebrated in this slick, if conventional, documentary. A "triple threat", as one interviewee notes, Vandross was an accomplished songwriter, producer and performer whose hits Never Too Much and Here and Now turned him into a global star in the 80s. He also struggled with weight issues, diabetes and speculation about his sexuality during his time in the spotlight before he died in 2005, aged 54, due to complications following a massive stroke. Director Dawn Porter (Trapper) gathers friends, collaborators and fans, including actor Jamie Foxx, to unpack the Grammy-winning artist's appeal. The best material comes early, with insight into Vandross's years as a background singer and his time collaborating with David Bowie on Young Americans. While Porter sensitively navigates the subject of Vandross's fluctuating weight, other topics, such as his resistance to coming out, get short shrift. The result is a documentary that, while competent, fails to hit the high notes.
