Taking its cue from Japanese manga and the current breed of adult-friendly animation, this feels like Disney's attempt to embrace the new millennium. A visually delightful tale of explorers hunting for a mythical lost continent, the film dispenses with the studio's traditional trademarks of cute animals and foot-tapping songs. Instead, it offers grown-up, multilayered storytelling combined with a relentless pace more associated with action features than cosy family viewing. Exquisitely animated and voiced by Michael J Fox and Leonard Nimoy, among others, the fantasy presents Atlantis as an earthly paradise, soothing the retinas before the consequences of its characters' foibles and ambitions explode into a thrilling climax. Directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale demonstrate a satisfying maturity with the result that this movie is more reminiscent of non-animated adventures such as 20,000 Leagues under the Sea than the duo's previous Disney assignments, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Beauty and the Beast.
