Terry Staunton

Charismatic criminal Luke Goss reunites with his old crew after a five-year prison stretch in a derivative thriller that's nowhere near as hip and savvy as it thinks it is. The reconvened felons hatch an elaborate plot to recover $33 million from an old drugs theft, but wily sheriff Val Kilmer, forced into retirement after failing to solve the original heist, is on their trail with an audacious plan of his own. The snappy editing, freeze-frames and riffing dialogue suggest writer/director Christian Sesma is working from a template that owes a sizeable debt to Get Shorty and Out of Sight, but fails to come close to the breezy personality of either. Goss does his best in a woefully underwritten role, Kilmer's one-dimensional presence is essentially an extended cameo, while the plot's myriad twists and turns are handled in a slipshod manner that confuses more than compels.
