Dave Golder

Gore and gags reign in this hyperactive horror comedy, which hits as often as it misses. Nicholas Hoult stars as Dracula's hapless, bug-eating servant Renfield, who has been sourcing blood donors for his boss (Nicolas Cage) for over a century. Looking for a way out, he joins a self-help group in New Orleans for people with abusive partners, and is inspired by a plucky cop (Awkwafina) to switch sides and become one of the good guys. There's much to enjoy here for cult horror fans, who will eat up the stylised action sequences and gross-out humour. Director Chris McKay also made The Lego Batman Movie, and Renfield has similar moments of invention and wit. However, the narrative feels thin, and leaves little room for quieter characters moments. That's a shame, because Hoult and Cage are huge fun - Hoult's dishevelled take on the diffident Brit out of water is wonderful, and Cage is deliciously over-the-top as the vampire grandaddy who gets all the best lines ("I am the victim here!").
