The murder of a sex worker in a quiet New England fishing village becomes the trigger for a cascade of other crimes in this patchily interesting film from writer/directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy. At the story's centre are sisters Priscilla (Sophie Lowe) and Mary Beth (Morgan Saylor). Having just buried their mother, money is tight... until Mary Beth discovers a windfall tucked away in the home of a dodgy local (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Someone who has other plans for the cash is brothel madam Enid, played by Margo Martindale in a dynamite performance. This aspires to be a Fargo-esque black comedy with the quirky, small-town vibes of early Twin Peaks. Unfortunately, drab colour grading and washed-out visuals - even when scenes have been filmed under blue skies - rather leach out much of the film's vitality. The central duo are equally leaden: when they freak out, scream at each other or panic, it feels half-hearted. Luckily, the film regains some vigour thanks to flashes of dark humour and an inspired soundtrack full of hearty, lung-expanding sea shanties.
