Suspense was never the strong point of the 14 Columbia B pictures based on the characters created by Jack Boyle. Instead, the storylines landed Boston Blackie (Chester Morris) in a jam and invited viewers to tag along to see how he extricated himself. The original Blackie had been an opium-addicted safecracker, although he soon became a reformed troubleshooter after first hitting the screen in 1918. Abetted by George E Stone as his sidekick, the Runt, Morris brought a stolid charisma to the role that reinforced the studio's no-nonsense approach. But emerging director Edward Dmytryk had his work cut out fitting tubercular siblings, assassinated sculptors, gold-digging chorines, crooked auctioneers, and a hapless ice cream seller (not to mention the secret panels and subterranean vaults) into a breathless 65-minute scenario. The improbabilities are exacerbated by the bullet-headed folly of Inspector Farraday (Richard Lane), after hard-up archaeologist's daughter Diane Parrish (Harriet Hilliard) decides to sell a valuable statue of Caesar Augustus to pay some medical bills.
