Canadian horror specialist Jesse Thomas Cook is clearly a fan of George A Romero's Night of the Living Dead. But Liv Collins, who co-scripted this zombie-plague saga, seems to fancy herself as Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) from the Coen brothers classic Fargo: not only does she play a heavily pregnant cop, but she sports the same trapper hat. Having had her vehicle stolen by a walker, Collins forges an alliance of (in)convenience with Adam Seybold, who had staggered to a remote house after waking up near-blind and handcuffed to a gurney in the back of an ambulance. Keeping dialogue to a minimum - apart from an expository exchange with the infected Ry Barrett (In a Violent Nature) - Cook lets the camera prowl stealthily to emphasise the pair's vulnerability in both cramped interiors and crepuscular expanses. Flickers of macabre wit pierce the melancholic pall, while there's an undeniable poignancy to the well-judged dénouement.
