This beguiling Brazilian drama offers a twist on the fairy tale format, as a reclusive fisherman's simple wishes expose the dark secrets of his fellow villagers. Childless, taciturn Crisóstomo (Rodrigo Santoro) is desperate for a child, and takes on young Camilo (Miguel Martines) when the lad's father dies. Then Crisóstomo yearns for a wife, and fate seems to send him one, when a reluctant bride (Rebeca Jamir) is abandoned on the night of her wedding. But behind these seemingly fateful coincidences is a network of interconnected tales of intolerance, homophobia and doomed relationships. Director Daniel Rezende cleverly structures his film as a series of apparently isolated stories that slowly dovetail together, and it's fun to pick up on all the little crossover clues. Stylistically, it's more like a Wes Anderson film but with a more muted colour palette and a harder edge. The result is an enticing fable with a social-realist heart, that looks gorgeous even when showing humanity at its most ugly and manipulative. It's slightly overlong, and hammers home its message at the end, but the film earns its stripes by offering a delightfully transgressive revision of the old "happily ever after" ideal.
