As a Skye native, Johnny Barrington is well placed to capture the sights and sounds of the Isle of Lewis in his debut feature. For all the rugged grace of Ruben Woodin Dechamps's 16mm landscapes, however, it's the aquatic cinematography of Jon Frank that enables the audience to get into the mind of Dondo (Louis McCartney), a teenager who refuses to believe that his fisherman father was lost at sea a year earlier. Paddling out on his surfboard, Dondo has no fear of the water. It's dry land that proves problematic, as he nurses a bashful crush on classmate Sas (Ella Lily Hyland) and a curiosity about the message preached by new minister, Paddy (Mark Lockyer). Ambitiously using absurdist humour, mysticism, and magical realism to re-examine coming-of-age truisms, Barrington slightly loses his grip in the psychologically turbulent final reel. But with the impressionable McCartney and the rebellious Hyland excelling, this has a quirkily distinctive character all of its own.
