A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Loosely based on true events, this crime drama chronicles the exploits of charismatic thief Bruno Sulak and his cat-and-mouse games with French police in the 1980s. Lucas Bravo enjoys himself playing Sulak, who steadily graduates from supermarket hold-ups to more elaborate jewellery heists. These are punctuated by audacious escapes from custody, not to mention the serial taunting of the detective on his trail (Yvan Attal), all while doe-eyed girlfriend Lea Luce Busato stands resolutely by her man. Mélanie Laurent's film is elegantly photographed with nods to continental thrillers of the 60s and 70s, although the style often trumps the substance and certain key plot points defy logic. The real-life Sulak's media reputation as a modern-day Robin Hood is curiously underplayed, compared to the screen time afforded his romantic relationship, but there's much to enjoy in the exchanges between the two male leads. Bravo brings an easy charm to the cocksure villain, pitted against Attal's more world-weary pragmatism, keeping viewers onside and willing to look the other way whenever the narrative goes walkabout.
