Based on events that took place in Sweden in the 1990s and 2000s, Ran Huang's engrossing drama offers several points of difference from the usual Nordic noir. A Chinese-Finnish-British co-production shot, for the most part, in English, it focuses on Mads Lake (Gustaf Skarsgåard), an inmate of a remote psychiatric unit, who starts to believe he may have committed a series of unsolved child murders. Traumatised therapist Anna Rudebeck (Andrea Riseborough) and lonely policeman Soren Rank (Stellan Skarsgåard, Gustaf's father) are tasked with getting the truth out of him. But at what point does collaboration become co-dependency? Skarsgåard Jr is heart-breaking as the haunted suspect, retaining our sympathies even as we contemplate the terrible things he may have done, while Riseborough and Skarsgåard Sr provide reliably strong support. Huang's direction is restrained, taking an elliptical, almost art-cinema approach that matches the uncertainty of Lake's testimony. This works brilliantly for the first hour, then less so as the film and the case lose focus. Still, it remains an impressive feature debut for Huang.
