Taking inspiration from real-life Floridian murderer Billy Mansfield Jr, Warren Skeels's baldly titled second film is a strange beast. Part coming-of-age story, part serial-killer flick, it unfolds across two timelines. In the first, counting forward from 1970, we watch a man in a white van kidnapping and murdering young women. In the second, based in 1975, we meet tomboy teenager Annie (Madison Wolfe) who starts seeing - you guessed it - a white van following her around. This approach is presumably intended to increase the tension, as we wait for the two narratives to intersect. But the drama ends up feeling repetitive and manipulative. Annie and her well-to-do family (including genre favourites Sean Astin, Ali Larter and Brec Bassinger) are not particularly interesting, anachronisms abound, and the appearance of the van is accompanied by an almost comically portentous droning sound. There is also something a little unsavoury about making up fictional victims for a real serial killer to prey on. Neither true crime, nor true horror, the film ends up splitting the difference, with unsatisfying results.
