James Mottram

"Work, bread and education," yell protesters on the streets in this unflinching documentary portrait of life in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Drawing together home movie footage shot in Kabul, director Sahra Mani assembles a raw and forthright work that shows pockets of resistance as women come to terms with the horrifying restrictions the Taliban imposes on them after the 2021 takeover. Among them, dentist Zarah, who uses her practice to house activists; the now-exiled Taranom, living in Pakistan; and government employee Sharifa. Moments of tenderness, like Zahra's nuptials, nestle alongside scenes that will shock, like grainy shots of the Taliban marching into town. But the lasting impression is one of the next generation of women fighting back against these manifold human rights abuses. "We want the Taliban to die!" children shout into the camera. Mani's film feels like a battle cry of resistance.
