Maverick troubleshooters-for-hire Rod Taylor and Dennis Cole spring into action when a train is hijacked near the American-Mexican border in this lightweight western. Hired by the railroad boss whose daughter is among the 73 hostages, the duo discover the villains are led by a revolutionary demanding the release of his brother, imprisoned by US authorities during the ongoing conflict between the two nations in 1914. The precise year allows for elements rarely seen in westerns, not least the heroes' glamorous Stutz Bearcat car. However, the reams of historical context slow down the narrative at the expense of gripping incident. The hinted-at back story of Taylor's and Cole's characters might have made a more compelling central plot, and indeed the pair would return when the film was spun off into Bearcat!, a short-lived series of 13 episodes. In this original configuration, though, the movie comes across as a half-formed TV pilot in need of considerably more work.
