Summary
Drama based on a true story, starring Alan Arkin and Pedro Cardoso. Brazil 1969: a rebel group fighting to overthrow the country's brutal military regime kidnaps the American ambassador and threatens to kill him if political prisoners are not released. But as the deadline for the diplomat's execution draws near, the revolutionary operation is compromised by an unlikely friendship.

Returning home after a decade in the States, Bruno Barreto landed an Oscar nomination for this involved political drama that's based on the autobiography of revolutionary-turned-journalist Fernando Gabeira. Set in 1969, with Brazil under a military dictatorship, the film recalls the abduction of American ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick by the MR-8 movement in a bid to secure the release of 15 political prisoners and publicise its cause. Playing fair with all the participants (including tormented torturer Marco Ricca), this is a gripping reconstruction, with the friendship between Alan Arkin's ambassador and Pedro Cardoso's journalist humanising, but not romanticising, a tense situation.
