Matt Glasby

One of the most controversial horror films of recent times, this Danish chiller fully earns its fearsome reputation. Directed by Christian Tafdrup from a script co-written with his brother Mads, the film starts as an uneasy social satire. After meeting on holiday, an uptight Danish family consisting of Bjorn (Morten Burian), Louise (Sidsel Siem Koch) and their daughter (Liva Forsberg) are invited to stay with their outgoing Dutch counterparts, Patrick (Fedja van Huet), Karin (Karina Smulders) and their son (Marius Damslev). There are dark laughs to be had as Patrick and Karin push the boundaries of social acceptability, and Bjorn and Louise squirm in bourgeois embarrassment, rather than standing up for themselves. But the awkwardness slowly simmers into something much more sinister, before the film delivers a hammer-blow ending that deserves to be mentioned alongside The Vanishing. What makes this so effective isn't just the violence, but the sense that we're complicit through our own moral cowardice, that title both a teaser and a rebuke.
