Summary
Period drama starring Daniel Craig, based on the novella by William S Burroughs. In the early 1950s, ageing American expat William Lee is living in Mexico City where he spends his time boozing, shooting up heroin and sleeping with a succession of younger men. When he meets and has a fling with a handsome GI, Lee becomes infatuated, but struggles to retain the affection of his paramour - much to his own increasing desperation.

Daniel Craig stars in this authentic-feeling, if overly indulgent, take on William S Burroughs's semi-autobiographical novella. He plays William Lee, a gay drug addict living in 1950s Mexico City who spends his time drinking, smoking and chasing sexual conquests in the local gay bars. That's until he meets the handsome Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey) and, after a whirlwind romance, convinces him to go on a consciousness-expanding trip to South America. There, the pair search for the hallucinogenic plant Yage, with help from an eccentric botanist (played by an out-there Lesley Manville). Visually, director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name) conveys this shabby mid-20th century world with real aplomb. Craig is fully committed to the role, wholly convincing as Lee, and he's surrounded by some fine actors, including a barely recognisable Jason Schwartzman as one of Lee's cronies. But the film's meandering nature means that Queer struggles to retain your attention as it rolls towards an epilogue that should be more poignant than it is.
