This RKO B-picture is a cornily quaint affair, produced by Oscar-winning cinematographer Lee Garmes (1932's Shanghai Express). Charles Winninger, C Aubrey Smith, and Harry Carey are perfectly cast as a trio of lonely elderly businessmen who throw a Christmas Eve party in their New York home. When they're stood up by their guests, they end up hosting two strangers (Richard Carlson and Jean Parker) who later get engaged. However, when the three men are killed in a plane crash, their ghosts return to help the young lovebirds secure their happy ending. While the film is undeniably schmaltzy, golden age Hollywood had a knack of sprinkling magic on its festive fare, and screenwriter Adele Comandini captures the innocent joys of the season in the most unaffectedly touching manner. The spiritual subtext might strike some as cloyingly sentimental, and the spectral special effects do look a little creaky. However, therein lies the charm that suffuses a saga whose simplicity and sincerity should melt the hardest heart.
