Summary

Legend says there are "ghost elephants" hidden in the highlands of Angola that have never been seen by humans. Acclaimed director Werner Herzog ("Grizzly Man") follows an epic quest to the Angolan highlands led by National Geographic Explorer and conservation biologist Dr. Steve Boyes to find these majestic and elusive creatures.

The quest for a near-mythic species of elephant is the engine of this engaging documentary from Werner Herzog. The veteran director's fascinating body of non-fiction work has often explored obsessions: those surrounding bears (Grizzly Man), volcanos (Into the Inferno) and subterranean spaces (Cave of Forgotten Dreams). Here, Herzog follows South African naturalist Dr Steve Boyes, on the hunt for the "ghost elephant", a giant of the species said to be living in the wilds of Angola but rarely glimpsed by man. Boyes is out to discover if these creatures are genetically related to an African bush elephant, preserved in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. If this feels a little dry, the film's venture into the plains of Angola is fascinating, made more so by narration from Herzog, spoken in his unmistakable lilt. There isn't madness in Boyes's eyes - this isn't quite a Moby-Dick tale - but the very fact the natural world still has its secrets in the information age makes this feel utterly exotic.
