Written and directed by Nick Hamm, WilliamTell is a competent historical epic with a central performance that fails to match its scale. ClaesBang plays WilhelmTell, the Swiss folk hero legendary for supposedly standing up against the tyrannical House of Habsburg in the early 14th century - most famously forced to shoot an apple from his son's head at 20 paces. Despite such a rabble-rousing role, Bang doesn't seem to be having any fun here, playing his modest marksman with a surprising softness. ConnorSwindells fares better as Tell's nasty nemesis, viceroy Albrecht Gessler. The film is packed with supporting characters, played by the likes of JonathanPryce and BenKingsley, but few of them feel fleshed-out and struggle to add conviction to Hamm's historical dialogue. The battles are staged with gusto and moments of tremendous savagery enliven the action. But trite warnings about the horrors of war and a rickety screenplay mean this old-school epic misses the mark.
