Terry Staunton

A disillusioned bomb-disposal expert and his police detective fiancée are in a race against time to hunt down an explosive device on a high-speed train in this solid but workmanlike thriller. Still haunted by a defusal job that went awry three years earlier, Austin Lin's harried hero is forced into action again after receiving a text message from the same bomber, who teases Lin that the clock is ticking towards another tragedy. A big box office success in its native Taiwan, the film sees director Hung Tzu-Hsuan embrace the spirit of western crowd-pleasers such as Die Hard 2 and Speed, although he falls short on the sustained tension of those particular movies. The story tends to lose momentum when it pauses to accommodate soap-like subplots involving specific passengers, but a nicely delivered twist gets proceedings back on track again. Lin and his co-star Vivian Sung work well together as they strive to save the day, and there's fine support from Lee Lee-zen as Lin's harried superior.
