This Hallmark adaptation of the Jane Austen classic sticks close to her original text and is refreshingly led by a Black cast. Two sisters, one practical, the other impetuous, are driven out of the family home by their brother, and navigate the seas of romance en route to true love (they hope). It is in most respects a traditional, bonnets-and-britches retelling, though the odd verbal anachronism rankles, and the evident breaks for TV advertising disturb Austen's pacing. The big plus is Deborah Ayorinde and Bethany Antonia as the chalk-and-cheese sisters. Playing young women negotiating suitors right and wrong, plus gossipy older women, silly older men and foes posing as friends, they gain the sympathy the story needs to be successful. The male actors seem less comfortable in their roles, but, on the whole, this adaptation works a charm.
