On the eve of the First World War, a young Irishman stumbles upon a dark secret on a remote and frosty Atlantic island, in director Xavier Gens's claustrophobic sci-fi horror. On this godforsaken, wind-lashed rock, a war rages between a gruff lighthouse keeper (Ray Stevenson) and a race of amphibious humanoids that attacks each night. Cold Skin boasts some magnificent visual storytelling, with elegant camerawork and edgy direction. The acting is also top notch, with Stevenson utterly compelling as the odious lighthouse keeper who keeps a female amphibian as a sex slave. But while the film is genuinely horrific at times, some underwhelming special effects occasionally blight the exquisite imagery. The story, too, falls flat, with few surprises and little to ultimately say about war or the human condition.
