Maika Monroe (Longlegs) props up this formulaic action thriller as a taciturn ex-con drawn into a spiral of blood, grit and guns. Ava Bly (Monroe) is fresh out of prison and trying to reconnect with her family when she witnesses the murder of her brother Tom (Jesse Irving), an incident that sends her down the violent rabbit-hole. Director Maxime Giroux and screenwriter Patrick Whistler bring in a slew of crime conventions - corrupt cops, wide cityscapes, a cat-and-mouse chase - yet the film's blend of cliché and convolution remains mostly undercooked. Monroe impresses, as does Troy Kotsur (CODA) as her rodeo-riding father, and the pair prove to be the film's biggest strengths. Unfortunately, Helen Hunt is underused in a solid but ultimately forgettable cameo as a crime boss. While some creative cinematography from Sara Mishara and a handful of decent scenes - particularly Tom's shock death and a heartfelt moment between Ava and her brother's baby in a gas station - are just about worthwhile, the film's incohesive narrative makes In Cold Light difficult to invest in.
