It's Great British Menu on steroids, as one restaurateur experiences the wildest night of his career in this gleefully hellish drama. Stephen Graham gives a blazing lead performance as highly strung chef patron Andy Jones. He arrives late at his new fine-dining venue to begin a busy Friday night, and is confronted with problems including a health inspection, staff issues and tricky customers. Director/co-writer Philip Barantini keeps the action bubbling by shooting in an astounding single 90-minute take (the finished film is the third of four attempts) that never feels gimmicky. Rather, it allows the cast to breathe and serves to smartly highlight the stress and the camaraderie that can arise in such a pressured environment. Screen time is divided across a broad ensemble, including Vinette Robinson as Andy's level-headed second in command and Jason Flemyng as a preening celebrity chef who knows how to needle our antihero. The film's frequent shifts in pace are carried along beautifully by Graham, whose realistic turn provides this almost comically jittery drama with its hammering heart.
