Conformity and disruptive desire are the key tensions in this slyly droll but derivative indie sci-fi romcom, which recalls dystopian fables such as THX 1138 and Equals. Bel Powley plays Joy, a young woman living in a community where messy feelings are suppressed by daily "vitamins". When she and her assigned partner (Nick Robinson) skip a dose, they embrace laughter and sex, but get into trouble with the authorities when they share the good times with friends. Director Michael Tyburski (The Sound of Silence) subtly navigates the couple's mood swings, showing how doped-up contentment gives way to tension, delight, jealousy and same-sex longing. Black Mirror's deadpan influence hovers nearby, as flashes of wit and satire poke through the film's elegantly blank surfaces. Powley's finely modulated lead performance holds the attention, though she's hampered by a plot that doesn't lead anywhere distinct or impactful enough for a set-up so familiar. Slickly styled but naggingly underdeveloped, Turn Me On would have benefited from raising its emotional stakes.
