Summary

Amy Adams stars as a mother who bites back in this clever, blackly comic twist on the werewolf movie. Credited only as "Mother", Adams's artist-turned-suburbanite feels trapped by the daily grind of looking after her toddler while her husband (Scoot McNairy) blithely goes to work. In fact, the emotional turmoil of her situation sees her christening herself "nightbitch". However, things change when she starts to sprout hair in unexpected places, the beginning of an empowering canine transformation that sees her grow in strength. Adapting the novel by Rachel Yoder, writer/director Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) presents a smart examination of midlife motherhood that frequently surprises. Dealing primarily with the issue of sacrifice, the film showcases a robust turn from Adams, who shows not a shred of vanity in her raw performance. Without leaning too heavily towards the horror genre - scaredy cats will be fine watching this - it's a neat genre-bending work that satisfies on multiple levels.
