Terry Staunton

Isabelle Fuhrman returns as Esther, the evil woman-child from 2009's Orphan, in a plodding prequel with few surprises but which at least mends a nagging plot hole from the first film. The action opens on Esther escaping (far too easily) from a high-security psychiatric facility in Estonia, then convincing police she is a young girl who went missing in the US four years earlier. The girl's emotionally distraught birth parents take her back to America, but despite Esther's physical resemblance to their daughter, suspicions begin to grow. This is a horror with a heap of hokum, delivering one or two above-average shocks but dependent on its audience being as dim as some of the film's characters. Fuhrman was just 12 years old when the original Orphan was released, so the actor - now over a decade older - has been digitally "de-aged" and filmed with other players on hidden raised platforms to disguise how tall she's grown. The trickery isn't always as accomplished as it could be, distracting from a narrative which already stretches credulity.
