In an Iranian village, divorcee Sara Shahverdi lives life like a one-woman revolution. Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni's eye-opening, evocatively shot and engaging documentary follows the formidable ex-midwife as she tackles the patriarchy at home and in the community. Sara's drive stems from her late father who, having only had daughters, raised her with skills he would normally have taught a son, including construction and motorcycle maintenance. Sons would in fact follow, but Sara retained a strong feminist streak, which we see her employing in the present day to stop her younger brothers disinheriting her sisters. Over seven years, the film-makers show Sara encouraging other girls to follow in her independent footsteps and vying to become the village's first female councillor - though winning that race is just the start of the fight. The documentarians don't shy away from showing her challenges, from men who think Sara should know her place to traditions involving child marriage, and even interference from the judiciary. Above all, the directors celebrate Sara's quiet heroism and determination to keep pushing for change, one day at a time.
