The grim legacy of the 1994 Formula One season is the spate of crashes at the San Marino Grand Prix that claimed the lives of two drivers, including triple world champion Ayrton Senna. It was also the year that relative newcomer Michael Schumacher established himself as a major player - although, as this fascinating documentary indicates, the death of his great rival did make him contemplate quitting the track for good. Through revealing archive footage of both the races and the behind-the-scenes machinations of the "circus" (as one contributor calls it), director Christin Freitag captures the risks and rewards of a dangerous high-speed sport and the effect it has on everyone involved. The young Schumacher alternates between boyish charm and steely determination, adjusting to the unwanted wake-up call of the tragedies with the help of his devoted girlfriend Corinna, who's constantly at his side to keep his feet on the ground. Present-day interviews with Corinna, now his wife of over 30 years, give the film heart and an emotional candour that should strike a chord with casual viewers and die-hard racing fans alike.
