Iconic fright franchises like Halloween, Scream or Saw are always ripe for revival, no matter how long the gaps between instalments. And the Final Destination series certainly makes a belated yet welcome return here, 14 years after 2011's fifth entry. The premise remains the same, as a group of people cheat Death following premonitions of doom, only to meet their demises in a series of horrific "accidents". In this slick and ghoulishly entertaining reboot, a student (Kaitlyn Santa Juana) is plagued by visions of a vast, generation-spanning link to the Grim Reaper's murderous modus operandi. Co-directors Adam B Stein and Zach Lipovsky proved their genre mettle with sci-fi thriller Freaks (2018), and they do so again here with a dazzling opening sequence set atop a sky-high tower in 1968, paving the way for the grisly calamities to come. The carnage can be eye-watering - anyone with a metal piercing may want to look away - but there's plenty of gallows humour in the film's wrong-footing close calls. Added emotional heft comes courtesy of franchise regular and Candyman horror icon Tony Todd, who died in 2024.
