The first adventure from a rebooted DC Cinematic Universe sees James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) writing and directing, and David Corenswet taking over Man of Steel duties from Henry Cavill. Gunn cuts to the chase with Superman already three years into his superheroic role and facing off against the nefarious Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), whose machinations knock the Caped Crusader's public image from hero to zero. Corenswet is a relatable, genial presence, suiting Gunn's enthusiasm for arcane comics lore: the film includes big-screen bows for the likes of tech genius Mr Terrific (a terrific Edi Gathegi), Green Lantern Guy Gardner (a pudding-bowled Nathan Fillion) and even the live-action debut of caped super-mutt Krypto. It's an entertaining outing stuffed with cameos and pithy quips, but with so much going on in this breathless blockbuster relaunch the story sometimes loses focus, while a number of supporting cast members struggle to make an impression. Nevertheless, the CGI-heavy fantasy action hammers along nicely, while Corenswet is convincing both in and out of costume - not least in his excellent chemistry with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
