A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Calum Baker

Director Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan) expertly tightens the screws throughout his rather ludicrous crime thriller. Paroled sex offender Kwon Yang-rae (Shin Min-jae) follows a young girl through the streets and into a Christian church, where he runs into minister Min-chan (Ryu Jun-yeol) and arouses suspicion. Before long, the devout Min-chan is pursuing his own kind of retribution against the troubled Kwon - who may or may not be guilty of a fresh crime - while detective Yeon-hee (Shin Hyun-been) is in hot pursuit. The narrative is piled with clichés, not least some fairly lazy, overly tidy psychology surrounding sex offences and criminal recidivism, but the actors sell the airport-novel material well enough. Yeon elevates his co-written screenplay with a controlled, downbeat tone and a consistent string of genuinely gripping scenes.
