Summary

Adventure based on a true story, starring Willem Dafoe. Siberian husky Togo is thought to be too small to make the grade as a sled dog, but he is made of stronger stuff than his handler, Leonhard, thinks. Togo comes into his own when diphtheria strikes Leonhard's town in 1925 and the only serum available is 600 miles away across the frozen wastes of Alaska.

An Alaskan musher pushes his team of huskies through a perilous snowstorm to fetch vital medicine in this heart-warming historical tale of canine heroism, based on real-life events. In 1925, freak winter conditions isolate a small town in the middle of a lethal diphtheria outbreak. Only Leonhard Seppala (Willem Dafoe) and his lead dog Togo have the skills to drive a husky sled team on the most treacherous leg of a 600-mile run to collect the antitoxin. But will 12-year-old Togo survive the ordeal? Although it features some fanciful icy action scenes that wouldn't look out of place in a Roland Emmerich disaster movie, this feels delightfully like a Disney film of yesteryear; the kind that Disney used to excel at making. It is unashamedly sentimental feel-good fare, with lots of cute furry critters, some nailbiting action, and plenty of breathtaking mountainscapes. And leading it all is a gnarly, mid-sixties Dafoe, who makes a brilliantly charismatic action hero.
