Kevin Harley

An ambitious urbanite discovers nature's benefits in this formulaic but modestly likeable redemption tale, loosely inspired by a true story. Ryan Corr plays Chris, a TV weatherman whose career capsizes when he accidentally causes a dolphin's death. A pattern emerges when, driving carelessly, he also runs down and kills a kangaroo. Following advice from lonely indigenous teenager Charlie (Lily Whiteley), Chris takes care of the 'roo's joey while he's stranded in an outback town. Amid streams of marsupial pee, Chris's discovery of his nurturing side provides the story's predictable backbone. Director Kate Woods struggles to balance this arc with her tale's deeper themes, with Charlie's grief over her father's death left underdeveloped. Darker twists involving animal poachers barely register, but compensation is offered in the form of a good-humoured veteran support cast (including Rachel House and Ernie Dingo) and some gorgeous landscape images. Weaving in a seamless mix of real, animatronic and - for muscly bruiser "Roger" - CGI kangaroos, Woods's mildly cheering feel-good fable generates just enough gentle charm to soften your cynicism.
