Set in the year 2045, this dystopian drama explores a desolate future Britain where all the adults have fled, leaving the kids to fend for themselves. In order to escape the violence, and get to the fabled Gateway, teenager Zero (Lauren Grace) and younger sibling Wake (Anya McKenna-Bruce) must submit themselves to the rules laid down by the older boys, including their brother Serger (Oliver Woollford). At best, this means being regularly checked to make sure they are still "pure"; at worst rape, forced prostitution, paedophilia and murder. Made for just £150,000, and clearly in earnest, this is a brave attempt to show how patriarchal systems cause everyone to suffer, even those who perpetuate them - like a micro-budget companion piece to A Handmaid's Tale and Children of Men. However, writer/director Faye Gilbert's feature debut is also hard to follow, relentlessly downbeat and so heavy with the ever-present threat of sexual assault that its 68-minute running time feels much longer.
