Marley and Me meets We Live in Time for this playful Brazilian drama about hope, friendship and leaving your mark on the world. Pedro (Rafael Vitti) is a promising young chef working in a fancy São Paulo restaurant whose life is turned upside down twice in one week - first, by the arrival of Caramelo, a mischievous but loyal stray dog, and then by a diagnosis that threatens both his health and career. Despite the daunting news, life takes an upward turn for Pedro as he gets promoted at work, wins over the girl and starts to see the world differently. Could his new four-legged companion have something to do with it? Though this is at times saccharine and a touch predictable, the characters are charming and the plot worth your time. It largely skirts the cutesy silliness of the typical "dog movie" (although do look out for some excellent animal actors) in favour of tenderly exploring love, loss and starting again. It's guaranteed to leave a sweet taste in your mouth.
