A determined police captain and a criminal mastermind engage in a battle of wits in this absorbing, edge-of-the-seat thriller set in south China. Wang Qianyuan stars as the head of a task force on the trail of a well-drilled gang (led by Daniel Wu), whose meticulously plotted heists have left countless bodies in its wake while always keeping one step ahead of its pursuers. The result is a savvy and sharply observed game of cat-and-mouse, in which the lawmen have to think like the villains to bring them to justice. Although inspired by real-life events where audacious robbers ran riot across parts of China for several years in the 1990s, director Lau Ho-Leung massages the truth in places to fashion an intricate, intelligent narrative that arguably owes a debt to Michael Mann's 1995 American crime opus Heat, not least in the mind games played by its two leads. Wu is especially impressive as the gang's shockingly ruthless head honcho, and the character-based drama is more than matched by brilliantly executed action sequences.
