Anne Maitland (Rosamund John) is a newly qualified King's Counsel about to embark upon her first court case. After a visit from her ex-boyfriend Guy (Guy Middleton), who says he's just been thrown out by his girlfriend, she's shocked when he's later arrested for the woman's murder. Naturally, she offers to defend him. This doesn't go down well with her current paramour (Hugh Sinclair), who's leading the prosecution... Given that Britain saw its first female KC just three years before this film was made, it's uncomfortable to see this fictional version treated with such contempt. The message here is very much that a woman should always choose a man over her career - although it's difficult to believe that Anne would risk doing this when she has so little chemistry with either co-star. At least the courtroom drama is diverting, with a smidge of real tension towards the end.
