Loretta Young rarely played schemers and she looks decidedly uneasy in this clumsy melodrama that warns against the dangers of allowing the despair of the Depression to crush American decency. As the unmarried mother of potential urchin Mickey (Jackie Kelk), she abandons protective bookseller Fuzzy (Henry Travers) and tries to scam milk millionaire Malcolm Trevor (Cary Grant) after he accidentally bumps into Mickey in his truck. First of all, she fakes Mickey's injury and then, after Trevor has adopted the boy, tries to break up his marriage to the angelic Alyce (Marion Burns). The potboiler storyline has dated badly and Lowell Sherman's direction is mawkish and manipulative, yet this remains a fascinating example of 1930s Hollywood's attempts to shape national morality.
