David Parkinson

Scripted by Booker prize-winning novelist James Kelman, this leisurely road movie sees a grieving widower and his son travelling from Scotland to the Deep South in an attempt to come to terms with their loss. Tom (David O'Hara) and 17-year-old Murdo (Neil Sutcliffe) have been through the mill, but their shared grief hasn't brought them closer, a fact that Tom hopes to fix with a visit to his older brother (David Hayman). However, Murdo realises he's ready to spread his wings when his love for music is rekindled by accordionist Queen Monzee-ay (Margo Moorer). Given that the father and son have little to say between bus journeys, it's a good job there's so much catchy music to fill the silences of this slow-burn drama. The film's insights into a divided society are subtle and shrewd, but the over-dependence on caricature and sentimentality undermines its hopeful message.
