Summary

Crime drama starring Payman Maadi and Navid Mohammadzadeh. Single-minded Tehran cop Samad Majidi is on the front line of the city's failing war on drugs. When he manages to arrest narcotics baron Naser Khakzad, what should be a huge breakthrough in Majidi's case instead proves to be the beginning of a gruelling game of cat-and-mouse.

Steve Morrissey

Iranian writer/director Saeed Roustayi's second feature reteams the stars of his first (2016's Life and a Day) for a crime drama that is impressively ambitious in scope. Payman Maadi and Navid Mohammadzadeh play off each other beautifully as the tough Tehran cop and the drugs kingpin engaged in a cat-and-mouse struggle, one trying to win a promotion, the other to avoid death at the end of a rope. Roustayi paints a vivid and often grim picture of filthy detention centres and a justice system that's on the verge of collapse. The film's opening and closing moments are breathtaking, and amid the gut-punch set pieces are fresh performances from supporting actors that deliver real emotional heft. Look out in particular for the remarkable debut of Yusef Khosravi as a child being encouraged to take the rap for his dad's drugs misdemeanours.
