Echoes of Val Lewton's Cat People (1942) reverberate around this creepily effective chiller, directed by Upstairs, Downstairs writer Alfred Shaughnessy. Barbara Shelley takes her new husband (Jack May) and a couple of pals along to her old, dark ancestral home where uncle Ernest Milton informs her that she's about to inherit the 700-year-old family curse. When she catches her gold-digging spouse smooching with his mistress, Shelley discovers her shape-shifting connection to the leopard that resides in her uncle's lair. But American psychiatrist Robert Ayres is determined to cure his old flame, even though she's ferally jealous of his own bride, Kay Callard. Returning to her native Britain after making her name in Italy, Shelley slips so cannily from victim to vamp that she was soon snapped up by Hammer. She receives scant help from the supporting cast, although Shaughnessy adeptly adjusts his film's tone as the action switches from the bestrewn Beaconsfield studio sets to the darkened streets of London's East End.
