This tense action drama from writer/director Alex Garland (Ex Machina) unfolds in an imagined near future in which the USA is locked in a violent civil war. The origins of the conflict are left deliberately vague, with the focus falling on a team of journalists - including Kirsten Dunst's renowned war photographer and Cailee Spaeny's rookie - traversing the nation to secure an interview with the President. The result is a complex film that serves as a paean to the bravery of war reporters but also a cautionary tale about the ethics of pursuing a scoop whatever the cost. Dunst and Spaeny are both terrific, and Stephen McKinley Henderson shines as a veteran reporter, but the film's finest turn comes from Jesse Plemons. In a brief but chilling appearance, he plays a psychopathic soldier who ranks as one of the most terrifying film characters in recent memory.
